Our History

Northwest Baptist Church was organized on the evening of Wednesday, October 26, 1988 with 25 people present at Johnson Funeral Home. The founders were Dr. James T. Sloan and Mr. Billy C. Batson. The first services were held at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, October 30, 1988, and for one year services were held at this chapel.

The church was incorporated in the state of South Carolina under the name, Northwest Baptist Church SBC, Inc. on March 22, 1989.

  • The site of the present building was purchased March 30, 1989, from Mr. T. Walter Brashier for $131,191.35. The first Deacon Ordination and Homecoming Services was held October 29, 1989. On October 17, 1990, Mr. Barney Slice painted the beautiful mural in the baptistery, and the first baptismal service in our present site was held October 21, 1990.

  • Our first pastor was Dr. James T. Sloan
  • Our first elected music director was Mr. R.F. Pitman who served in that capacity until his death in December, 2014.
  • Pastor Wayne Leopard served May 17, 1998 to October 10, 2007.
  • Pastor Fred Pittman served from October 21, 2007 to April 29, 2009.
  • Pastor Claude McIntosh served May 3, 2009 and retired July 1, 2018.
  • Mr. Bill Vaughn assumed the job of music director in December 2014.
  • Pastor David Allen began serving September 2018 and continues serving today.
